You are partially correct. My parents and I were traveling to Worms with the Parady's to see the cathedral and a museum. I cannot recall the exact reason for the trip, though I believe it was connected to Martin Luther. On our way, we stopped in Speyer, just south of Worms, home to a massive cathedral of its own.
Centered in the cathedral's outer plaza was the broad stump of a giant oak tree. Something about the scene sparked my imagination, and I announced right then and there that Martin Luther had preached from that tree trunk. The story took on a life of its own as I painted the picture: a huge, eager crowd surrounding the stump while a furious priest leaned over the cathedral steps, shaking his fist and shouting at the crowd. I was improvising completely. The environment was just so evocative, and once I saw I had a rapt audience, I couldn't resist embellishing the scene.
Later on, I discovered the actual history. Luther never set foot in a Speyer pulpit, but the stump had indeed served as a stage for real drama. A wave of radical, dissenting preachers had taken turns standing on that oak trunk to address the masses, prompting church leaders in Speyer to coin the word *Protestant* as they tried to sweep those fiery speakers out of the city.
But on to the main story.
We stepped inside Speyer Cathedral. The scale was overwhelming; standing at the front entrance, the high altar felt a world away. We wanted to descend into the crypt where the German kings and queens were buried in massive stone sarcophagi topped with carved effigies. Although I had never set foot in the cathedral before, an inexplicable certainty came over me.
"Follow me," I said. "I know where the stairs are."
The crypt stairs were situated behind the main altar, completely hidden from sight until you walked directly around to the back. Without hesitation, I led everyone straight down into the crypt to view the royal tombs. For the rest of the visit, everyone kept asking how I knew where those hidden stairs were. Truthfully, I had no answer. It felt like a moment of pure déjà vu.
Since then I wondered if in a past life I was a monk there are something. I still remember it vividly.

The Andrew Carlssin story was only reported in Weekly World News, a (beautiful) wacky news newspaper I subscribed to as a kid. It is fiction.
